sweet home alabama (film) Plot

In the present day, Melanie is an accomplished fashion designer based in New York City who has chosen the surname “Carmichael” in order to conceal her humble Southern upbringing

. As a result of Andrew Hennings’ proposal, Melanie returns to her home state of Alabama to tell her parents about the engagement and to formalize her divorce from her first husband, Jake, whom she had left after a miscarriage caused them to become estranged from one another

During this time, Kate Hennings, Andrew’s mother and the Mayor of New York City, has expressed reservations about Melanie’s suitability to marry her son, whom she is grooming to run for President of the United States.

Melanie pays a visit to Jake, who has chosen to postpone signing the divorce papers. After Jake kicks Melanie out of his house, Melanie drains Jake’s bank account in an attempt to persuade him to call off the marriage.

Eventually, Jake concedes and agrees to the divorce, promising to return the signed divorce papers the next morning.

In a later incident, Melanie becomes inebriated and taunts her old school friends before outing an old childhood buddy, Bobby Ray Bailey, in a local pub. Melanie wakes up the next morning to find the signed document on her bed.

Melanie travels to the Carmichael property in order to express her regrets to Bobby Ray. Melanie is cornered by Kate’s assistant, who has been dispatched to the location to obtain information about Melanie’s background.

Bobby Ray substantiates her claim that she is a distant relative and that the family mansion was her childhood residence. Melanie finds out that Jake had followed her to New York in an attempt to get her back after she had broken up with him following her breakup with Jake.

He was intimidated by the metropolis and her success, so he returned to his hometown to build a name for himself first. The two of them have a heart-to-heart chat, and Melanie comes to terms with the fact that Jake never signed their divorce papers.

Andrew arrives to surprise Melanie, but when he discovers her true history and that Jake is her husband, he becomes enraged and storms out of the room.

He subsequently returns, stating that he still wishes to marry Melanie, and the wedding plans are promptly put into motion to that end.

Melanie’s pals from New York have arrived for the celebration. A nearby restaurant/resort with a glassblowing exhibition attracts their attention and they admire the glass sculptures that are comparable to those they have seen in New York while there.

Melanie comes to the realization that Jake is the artist and that he owns the resort.

Melanie and Andrew’s wedding ceremony at the Carmichael estate is interrupted by the arrival of a lawyer, who calls the event to a halt. He has Melanie’s divorce papers in his possession, despite her refusal to sign them. Melanie admits that she still has feelings for Jake and decides to call off the wedding. Even though Kate berates Andrew and insults Melanie, her family, and the entire community, which results in Melanie punching Kate in the face; she and Andrew exchange well-wishes nonetheless. Melanie discovers Jake at the beach after a downpour, where he is placing lightning rods in the sand in order to construct more glass sculptures. She claims that they are still together. Their first dance as husband and wife takes place at the location of Melanie and Andrew’s wedding celebration, which they had previously attended.

Midway through the film, it is revealed that they have a baby daughter, Melanie is continuing to grow as a designer, and Jake has opened a “Deep South Glass” franchise in New York City. Andrew Vanderbilt is engaged to Erin Vanderbilt, who happens to be his long-term girlfriend.

Sweet Home Alabama (film) critical

The Sweet Home Alabama (film) critical reception for this picture has been largely mixed so far.

On Rotten Tomatoes, based on 159 reviews, 38 percent of critics gave the film positive reviews, resulting in an average rating of 5.19/10 for the film.

It is said that “Reese Witherspoon is attractive enough, but the road to Alabama has been well-traveled,” according to the site’s critics’ consensus: [4] Metacritic gives the film a weighted average score of 45 out of 100, which indicates “mixed or average reviews” based on 35 reviews from critics.

As noted by Roger Ebert, film critic for the Chicago Sun-Times, the film was given three out of four stars, with the following comment: “With Reese Witherspoon at its center, it is a fantasy, a pleasant, light-hearted fairy tale with a happy ending.”

This actress is every bit as endearing as Doris Day would have been in this role… In the end, I enjoyed Witherspoon and the local flavor, but I am completely fed up with the basic concept.”

Andrew Sarris, a critic for the New York Observer, wrote that if Reese Witherspoon, 26, had not been present to inject her pure fantasy character, Melanie Carmichael, with a massive infusion of old-fashioned Hollywood magic, the film “would have been an unendurable viewing experience for this ultra-provincial New Yorker.”

The picture earned more than US$35 million in its first weekend of release. Sweet Home Alabama generated more than US$130 million during its run in the United States, and another US$53,399,006 during its worldwide run by the time it was completed. Despite receiving poor reviews, despite having a stated budget of US$30 million, it was a box office success.
